Registering for Commons Beta

Are there instructions somewhere of how to get the gwtoolset permission? All the instructions say on this page is "you will need to be a registered user at one of the following websites and ask the site admin to add you to the ‘gwtoolset’ permission group" but it doesn't explain how to do this.

Thanks

User rights

The prerequisite for user rights was not clear when I signed up and I only noticed the new bullet point this morning. I've registered a new account at Commons Beta (which wasn't mentioned) but the user rights request process seems clumsy. I cannot access IRC. The link just takes me to a Google search (using Google Chrome; I don't think it recognises it as a valid link). Am I really supposed to spam every bureaucrat and developer on Commons Beta with my request? Do they even monitor their Commons Beta talk pages? (The first few I looked at hadn't been active in a long time.) Isn't there a better way to do this? - AdamBMorgan (talk/meta) 13:38, 7 April 2015 (BST)

info on requesting access

Sorry to see this so late - was on leave last week so just checking in today on the train down. I've updated with info on how to request access - didn't realise that the documentation was still so sketchy on this point! ACrockford (talk) 15:43, 7 April 2015 (BST)

A mass edit tool?

Just playing around with VisualFileChange on Commons. Not very user-friendly but might enable the mass improvement of metadata on existing files. I'll let you all know if I learn more. PatHadley (talk) 12:12, 11 April 2015 (BST)

That would be brilliant, thanks Pat. I was also going to send a query round the GLAMTools mailing list about the desire for/possibility of creating a tool or writing a script that would allow GLAMs to retrieve updated metadata from uploaded files on Commons - wondering if it would be that difficult to scoop categories and details from the template and export it into an XML or even an Excel file? Any input before I send this query around (so I look like less of an idiot) would be appreciated! ACrockford (talk) 12:41, 13 April 2015 (BST)
VisualFileChange does seem pretty good. I haven't tried it for complex edits yet but quickly and easily replaced the author field with a creator template on all these Tempest Anderson files. Pretty useful - especially as Creator Templates and other bits get more closely linked to WikiData. PatHadley (talk) 12:48, 23 April 2015 (BST)
