A panellist on the "culture of openness"

My name is Martin Poulter. Based at the University of Bristol, I have a background in teaching support and Open Educational Resources project within Higher Education, as well as in Wikipedia as an author and reviewer of scientific articles. I'd be prepared to defend the following statement:

"The exact factors that contribute to Wikipedia's success as a community are exactly those which managerialism and competition are eroding from higher education in the UK."

I would do this in detail by describing what I know of each culture. I could do this as part of a panel on openness, on cultural change, Wikipedia education projects or other topics, depending on what other panellists come forward.

Since I'm the convenor of the conference, I'd be very happy to withdraw this proposal to make room for other speakers! MartinPoulter (talk) 20:56, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Talk(s) on Secondary education

A lot of our focus is on Higher Education. I'd like to talk about my experiences and ideas for Secondary education using a local example. I'd like to talk about focusing on obtaining better *readers* at this younger age, rather than editors. I could also talk about how to discuss Wikimedia projects with younger generations. --ErrantX (talk) 12:32, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Sounds great. Have you seen this? I think your experiences could prompt a very interesting discussion.Leutha (talk) 12:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes I remember you mentioned that over the weekend; I'll reply there. --ErrantX (talk) 12:51, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Experimenting with Wikipedia at a Mexican university

Basically, Id like to do a short version of the presentation Im making at Wikimania in July [1]

Most Wikipedia related projects have been related to replacing the term paper with the writing of Wikipedia articles in some way. While this is fine for a number of educational institutions, there are some which do not stress research such as technical schools in Mexico. This has led us to experiment with other ways of collaborating with Wikipedia such as translation assignment for foreign language, outreach activities and cooperating with the preparatory division's International Baccalaureate program, with has a community service requirement suitable for adaption to Wikipedia. In these cases, the stress in on participating in the Wikipedia/Wikimedia community rather than "simple" writing, for authentic communication in English-as-a-foreign language as well as the opportunity to learn about international communication. Students has done everything from translation of small articles to GLAM work to having an entire class centering on "immersion" into the Wikipedia "culture."

I will definitely need help with travel expenses, if this proposal is accepted.Thelmadatter (talk) 16:07, 24 May 2012 (UTC) Thelmadatter (talk) 16:07, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Talk : Wikipedia and Social Media - A Perfect blend to develop and assist the learning community

Hello,

I am Adethya Sudarsanan from Chennai, India. I am a Wikipedian, who is interested in using Wikis as an effective tool to enable learning across the students, teachers and every one who is associated with education sector in any form.

I have drafted a new proposal which focuses on improving the educational sector through Wikipedia and linking them with Social Media.

Please find my proposal draft below. I am so looking forward to present in it a Wikipedia Conference, so that I can discuss and implement this for the benefits of all the students and teachers.

== Here goes the proposal ==

“Data is unprocessed information”, this was the definition of data a few decades ago. As technology progresses in every possible sphere; transforming business and connecting people, the definition of data changes from “unprocessed information” to “potential business opportunity”.

This business opportunity arises from the inevitably strong social media, which is churning data in the form of live feeds, status updates and other online activities of users all over the world. If technology can tap potential data from social media and re-structure them accordingly, it will help different businesses grow. In addition to the mammoth growth expected, the data from social media will also help in customizing the needs of any industry in no time. Now, that being said, the idea here is to promote raw customer/user information into potential data which will enable organizations to re-align their strategies to make their business successful.

This proposal focuses on developing a medium through which the above mentioned idea is accomplished. The industry under consideration for the proposal is education sector, which is booming with the advent of technology, that supports learning on the move.

Further explanation of the idea is restricted, as the idea is under process for patent/copyrights. The author is more than glad to release the remaining portion of the idea, upon the talk getting selected for screening at EduWiki Conference 2012, UK.

Note: This idea is already in process to acquire a patent / copyright. All rights of the text, idea and concept rests with the author.

A Kind Request : I am looking for financial assistance (travel, accommodation) to make it to the conference, in the event of my proposal getting selected. Thanks in advance
