Project description

Briefly describe the issue or problem that motivates this application. What needs are you meeting?

The idea behind Open Badges actually came from the Wikipedia barnstars and was picked up by Mozilla a few years ago. They have been taken up by [Sweden], where [Mörtsell] has been taking the lead. They will feature in the forthcoming Mozfest, and by attending I can reconnect Wikimedia in the UK with this initiative to see how it can be taken forward in an educational context

Describe project activities. What will you use the funding to do?

Attend Mozfest (28th, 29th & 30th October); Fringe Event (Eighth East London Meetup, October 25th will be proposed as a fringe event)

Describe your plan for evaluating this project. How will you measure success? What types of things will you measure (e.g. content, participants)?

The project will be evaluated with a report contributed to Wikimedia UK building on Wikimedia UK and Open Badges

Identify key people involved in this project. How will or could the wider Wikimedian community be involved?

Self, Sara Mörtsell will be consulted. Efforts will be made to encourage other Wikimedians to get involved, but they may also need their entrance fee of £45 paid for.

If applicable, identify partnering organisations for this project (not essential)

n/a

If you feel that there is more information that could be for example resources needed, how successes can be measured, and how it fits in with the aims of Wikimedia and Wikimedia UK. Please note that these answers don't have to be definite now, and can be expanded on in conversation with the programme team.

What targets have you set? What will you measure?
  • Raise matter at at least 3 meetups (London, East London and Cambridge)
  • Give out 100 leaflets at Mozfest
  • Make sustained contact with 5 new people at Mozfest
  • Find 5 Wikimedians in the UK interested in taking Open Badges forward in relation to Wikipedia
  • Exchange information with Wikimedia Sweden and find one more chapter engaged in badges (I think they are probably out there.
  • Produce a report summarising teh project with proposals to go forward in the context of the new Wiki Education Foundation Dashboard
What contribution will the project make to our strategic goals?

There are four strategic goals this will help:

  • Strategic goal G2a.3: Open Badges provide a structure in which we can acknowledge the skills and capabilities of our volunteers in an evidence-based fashion.
  • Strategic goal G2b.3: Open Badges provide an efficient way in which our impact can be measured through both the quality and quantity of the badges we issue.
  • Strategic goal G4.2: Open Badges constitute a robust and efficient toolset which will allow us to to allow support our own programmes and effectively record impact measures.
  • Strategic goal G5: This initiative will facilitate shared learning across the entire movement, as other chapters and WMF are starting to go down this road. By taking this forward we are playing a leading role in sharing good practice and acting as a focus for debate. Also we will be working with non-Wikimedia open knowledge groups to further our open knowledge vision (Mozilla, P2pU).
Who will be recording/measuring the project metrics, and writing up a project report?

self

What staff support is being requested?

n/a

How can you get other volunteers involved? What roles could they have?

Lucy has already invited suggestions for the event on the Wikimedia UK list. I will set up event pages on Wikimedia UK Wiki, English Wikipedia, and personally raise the matter at the London and Cambridge meetups. An email has been sent to the Wikimedia UK list
