Microgrants/Remembrance Sunday

Overview

I intend to attend the Remembrance Sunday services at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Sunday 11 November 2012 in order to photograph the events for Wikimedia Commons. I've arranged to stay with a friend overnight on Saturday so that I can be there early enough to get a good position and I've arranged to borrow a DSLR from another friend. I'm asking for financial assistance in getting to and around London. I note that a microgrant for a similar goal was approved relatively recently.

Budget
  • Train fare to London: £39.25
  • Local travel within London (by Tube using Oyster card): (£2.60 from station to where I'm staying Saturday night, £2.60 from there to Central London, £2.00 back to the station), total: £6.20

Total: £45.45

Timeline

I need the money ASAP (reimbursement afterwards is okay, but less than ideal). It would all be spent on Saturday 10 November and Sunday 11 November 2012. It might take me a few weeks to upload all the photos to Commons, and possibly slightly longer to get them into use in articles, but once uploaded the photos will be free for everyone to use anywhere (I use the CC-By 3.0 license) forever. Or at least until the apocalypse.

Expected outcomes

Good-quality photographs of the event, the place, and possibly some of the people involved, which will be uploaded to Commons and (as appropriate) added to Wikipedia articles.

Who I am

I'm Harry. Long-time Wikipedia editor and veteran admin (>60k edits), long-time editor on Commons (~8k edits), and possibly the WMUK volunteer to have racked up the most miles travelling for the chapter in the last year. ;) What I lack in photography skill is compensated for by a clever camera and taking lots of photos in the hope that one of them is good.

Discussion

Hi Harry. Many thanks for submitting this microgrant request, however I'm afraid that in this case we can't fund it as-is since there are a number of alternative options available here that would be rather more cost-effective:

  1. There are quite a few Wikimedians based in London that might be able to attend the event and take photos of it for significantly less travel costs - have you asked if anyone local would be able to do this?
  2. There are also quite a few photos on Flickr of the ceremony [1] - have you asked if any of those photographers would be willing to release their photos under a free license? Or are there any official images available under an Open Government License?
  3. Have you looked into whether there is any special access to the event apart from getting there early? In the case of the paralymic microgrant there was an element of special access involved.
  4. It would also have been helpful if there were multiple elements to your application, e.g. photographing other events taking place in London that day, or doing some fact-finding to improve the text of the relevant Wikipedia articles.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to reply to this quicker since the timing for this was so short. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:07, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
