Macrogrants/Travel grant for WM CEE

Objective

To offer a general travel grant so that Wikimedia Serbia can offer more travel support for small chapters and "proto-chapters" in the CEE region to have representation at the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2012. The two-day conference programme is intended to promote "cooperation among the Wiki communities, Wikimedia chapters and the other interested groups from the region of Central and Eastern Europe".

The programme includes workshops on GLAM best practices and will discuss participation in the Chapters Association. Fæ has been invited to take part in the programme.

Goals

Provide sufficient funds for several smaller chapters to take part and improve their own best practices.

Resources

I would expect this to be a free grant of 2,000 euros to Wikimedia Serbia. This should be sufficient for three or more people to take part and cover their travel and accommodation in Belgrade.

Constraints

Time is limited - realistically a decision would be needed this week for Serbia to make offers of support.

Outcomes

Wikimedia UK seen as actively working with other chapters outside of the European Union.

Risks

None. -- (talk) 12:02, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Discussion

Would this not be better suited for the WMF grants process since it's not particularly related to the UK? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 12:34, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Maybe, in which case there is no point in me bothering spending any time applying as I doubt that the WMF grant system would respond in reasonable time, and they would reject any proposal from me on the basis that I am not Serbia. Does this mean that the UK will only provide grants from now on for Wikimedia UK events, or for Wikimedia UK members? This is probably something we should clarify against our mission as the interpretation seems to have changed significantly considering that in the recent past we provided a £2,000 grant towards the Chapters Finance meeting (to WMFR, by definition not the UK) and we sponsored the OKCon for over £1,000 which by definition is not Wikimedia. If our mission is to be constrained to the UK or for the benefit of our members, then it ought to say that. Thanks -- (talk) 12:45, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
