We like to think that Prosiect Llên Natur is at the forefront in Wales in collecting and collating many aspects of environmental information through the Welsh language. This is very dependent upon standard naming and describing species in a way which is common to all potential users (translators, broadcasters, academia, naturalists and ecologists and the general public). Our species project underpins this wider effort and exists on two of our Llên Natur platforms, namely:

1.) the LEXICON of 17,000 standardised species names developed over 40+ years which continues to grow as more species lists are slowly added in the Bywiadur section of our own website (as well as as in book form). These are presented with imported Wici images and some sound files.

2.) The various Welsh language species ACCOUNTS in various stages of development (mostly stubs) on Wicipedia Cymraeg. These Welsh accounts differ from their English counterparts in that they attempt to present the species, as far as is possible and realistic, from a Welsh point of view.

Since Edinburgh 2017 we have developed some accounts in Wicipedia to a moderate extent, and in some cases considerably, and while in the process, we have discussed appropriate style and content with Wici staff. We thus have a number of models to guide further efforts.

However the impact of this effort on the whole resource remains low in relation to that which is available in the form of names and ‘stub’ accounts. In order to increase this effort and to maximise its social and educational benefit, we resolved to look at the possibilities of incorporating the resources of a new Wicipedia/Llên Natur partner (through the good offices of Wicipedia), the Welsh Joint Examination Commitee (WJEC) examination board, with a view to recruiting A-level Welsh Baccalaureat students to this effort.

This proposal was eventually accepted by the WJEC and initial work is in hand to coach a group of c10 A-level students at Ysgol David Hughes, Porthaethwy, who are reading Biology and Welsh in, first, the general ethical and technical aspects of Wicipedia (by Wici staff) and then on the content issues relating to the development of fully formed species articles (by ourselves). This is by way of a pilot which we hope will be extended to other students in other schools.

Rydyn ni’n hoffi meddwl bod Prosiect Llên Natur ar flaen y gad yng Nghymru yn casglu a choladu sawl agwedd o wybodaeth amgylcheddol trwy gyfrwng yr iaith Gymraeg. Mae hyn yn ddibynnol iawn ar safonau enwi a disgrifio rhywogaethau sy’n gyffredin i bob defnyddiwr potensial (cyfieithwyr, darlledwyr, academia, naturiaethwyr ecolegwyr a’r cyhoedd). Mae ein prosiect rhywogaethau yn sail i’r ymdrech ehangach yma, ac mae’n bodoli ar ddau o’n platfformau Llên Natur sef:

1.) GEIRIADUR ENWAU A THERMAU o 17,000 o enwau rhywogaethau safonol wedi ei ddatblygu dros 40+ o flynyddoedd, ac sy’n parhau i dyfu fel mae mwy o restrau o rywogaethau yn cael eu hychwanegi’n araf i’r adran Bywiadur ar ein gwefan (yn ogystal ag ar ffurf llyfr). Mae’r rhain yn cael eu cyflwyno gyda delweddau Wici sydd wedi eu mewnforio a rhai ffeiliau sain.

2.) Y CYFRIFON rhywogaethau amrywiol yn yr Iaith Gymraeg sydd mewn gwahanol gyfnodau o gael eu datblygu (bonion yn bennaf) ar y Wicipedia Cymraeg. Mae’r disgrifiadau yma’n wahanol i’r rhai cyfatebol Saesneg gan eu bod yn ceisio cyflwyno’r rhywogaeth, cyn belled ag sy’n bosib ac yn realistig i wneud hynny, o safbwynt Cymreig.

Ers Caeredin 2017 rydym wedi datblygu rhai cyfrifon yn Wicipedia i faint cymhedrol, a sylweddol mewn rhai achosion, a thra yn y broses yma rydym wedi trafod steil a chynnwys addas gyda staff Wici. Mae gennym felly nifer o fodelau fel canllaw i ymdrechion pellach.

Er hynny, mae effaith yr ymdrech yma ar yr holl adnodd yn isel mewn cymhariaeth â beth sydd ar gael ar ffurf enwau a chyfrifon bonion. Er mwyn cynyddu’r ymdrech yma a mwyhau ei les cymdeithasol ac addysgiadol, penderfynom edrych ar y posibiliadau o ymgorffori adnoddau partner arall Wicipedia/Llên Natur (trwy waith da Wicipedia), sef Bwrdd Arholi Cyd Bwyllgor Addysg Cymru (CBAC), gyda’r bwriad o recriwtio myfyrwyr lefel A Bagloriaeth Cymru i gefnogi’r ymdrech yma.

Yn y pen draw derbyniwyd yr argymhelliad yma gan CBAC, ac mae gwaith dechreuol ar y gweill i hyfforddi grŵp o tua 10 o fyfyrwyr Lefel A Ysgol David Hughes, Porthaethwy, sy’n astudio Bioleg a Chymraeg yn elfennau technegol a moesegol Wicipedia (gan staff Wici), ac yna ymlaen i faterion ynghylch cynnwys yn ymwneud â datblygu erthyglau rhywogaeth llawn (gennym ni). Gobeithiwn y gall y peilot hwn gael ei ymestyn i fyfyrwyr eraill mewn ysgolion eraill.
